Cat upgrades hydraulics in multi-terrain loaders

Caterpillar’s 267B, 277B and 287B multi-terrain loaders feature new turbocharged engines with more power, higher breakout forces, redesigned operator station components, and, of course, refinements to the hydraulic system.

Caterpillar’s new B Series of multi-terrain loader combine smart equipment design with strategic use of hydraulics to reduce and simplify maintenance without sacrificing performance or reliability.

The multi-terrain loaders are compact, rubber-tracked machines designed for exceptional versatility, flotation, traction, stability, and ride quality by combining the benefits of a skid-steer loader those of a suspended rubber track undercarriage. The suspended undercarriage transfers machine weight to the ground through wheeled contact points bearing against the track — resulting in low ground pressure.

The three new loaders are powered by Cat’s new 3044C DIT diesel engine. It has a displacement of 3.3 l and develops up to 78 hp (59 kW) and complies to US EPA Tier 2 requirements. The 287B, largest of the three, has an operating capacity of 3600 lb (1632 kg), defined as 50% of tipping load.

All three machines use hydraulic joysticks that control pilot flow. Because the joysticks control hydraulics directly, they are less complex than their electronic cousins, highly reliable, and completely immune to electromagnetic and radio frequency interference. However, an optional deluxe joystick incorporates positive-action buttons to control work tool hydraulic or electrical functions.

Hydraulic system design improvements include fewer potential leak points, which improves reliability, cleanliness, and reduces maintenance. A 5-µm spin-on filter keeps hydraulic oil clean, and a high-efficiency hydraulic oil cooler allows the machines to work smoothly in high ambient temperatures.

The loaders’ rear service door opens 90°, and access to service points — such as checking hydraulic fluid level — is configured for quick and convenient use. For access to hydraulic pumps, motors, and valves, a technician can tilt the cab rearward by using a single tool. A self-latching mechanism holds the cab in place. The cooling fan and air conditioning compressor are hydraulically driven to eliminate maintenance required by belt drives.

Multi Terrain Loaders - Model 247B

Cat Multi Terrain Loaders are much like Cat Skid Steer Loaders with a similar upper chassis, operator station, loader arms, quick coupler and many work tools but with a suspended rubber track undercarriage for lower ground pressure.

The Caterpillar Multi Terrain Loader, with its many work tool options, is a highly versatile, compact construction machine. It is designed to deliver traditional Cat reliability and productivity in the toughest working conditions.

Benefits & Features

Caterpillar hystat power train delivers aggressive performance and easy operation.

Cat Diesel Power

The heart of the Cat Multi Terrain Loader power train is the Caterpillar 3024C Turbo diesel engine. This rugged, reliable, four cylinder engine offers aggressive performance and a fast torque curve for quick response. It is also a low emission engine, fully U.S. EPA Tier 2 and EU Stage II compliant.

Cold Starting Aid

Dual Engine Throttle Controls

The hand and foot throttles allow the operator to match engine speed to the task. The hand throttle is ideal for jobs requiring consistent engine speed - such as cold planing, trenching or snow blowing. The foot throttle lets the operator vary engine speed and minimize fuel consumption for other tasks such as load and carry, truck loading, grading and dozing.

Anti-Stall Feature

The anti-stall system on the Cat Multi Terrain Loader allows maximum power to the tracks while minimizing engine stalling. This system helps maximize productivity for experienced operators and makes it easier for novice operators to become productive.

Closed-Loop, High Output Hydrostatic System

The dual, closed-loop, axial piston hydrostatic pumps are driven directly off the engine. The pumps provide pressure and flow to two fixed displacement motors that power the final drive motors, driving the tracks. No chains are used.

Operator Station

World-class operator station provides exceptional working comfort with excellent visibility, enhanced fingertip control and optimum instrumentation.

Rubber Track Undercarriage

The unique rubber track undercarriage provides low ground pressure, stability, high traction, fast travel and suspension.

Tackle tough conditions by turning a Multi Terrain Loader into a Mini Dozer

When landscape or contstruction contractors encounter soft, muddy underfoot conditions, sloped terrain, sensitive surfaces such as turf, or tight spaces on the jobsite, turning a Multi Terrain Loader (MTL) into a mini dozer may be the solution. By exerting very low ground pressure, MTLs can give operators access to areas where a larger machine would not be a practical choice for moving dirt, gravel, snow and other materials or leveling the worksite in finish grading applications.

Two types of blades are available. Renting these work tools can help a contractor test them on jobsite conditions, to help determine the best fit for his or her fleet.

Angle Blades

With a bolt-on curved moldboard and a common back interface structure, angle blades can be hydraulically angled 30 degrees right or left of center. Adjustable, removable skid shoes add stability and provide depth control when operating on hard surfaces such as asphalt or concrete. Angle blades can be set at three different height positions, to accommodate specific dozing requirements or tire arrangements.

For aggressive earthmoving applications, operators can lock the blade, while for tasks such as pushing livestock waste or snow the T-handled pins can be removed to enable a lighter blade trip.

Snow kit supplements can further expand an angle blade’s capabilities. Such kits feature bolt-on guard assemblies to increase the moldboard height by 7 in. and to expand the angle blade contour and capacity. High-visibility vertical edge markers, indicate blade width and moldboard orientation to machine operators. The edge markers are intended to remain flexible to temperatures above -40 degrees F. Also available, non-metallic, reversible blade edges are designed to squeegee material without marring concrete or asphalt surfaces such as parking lots, sidewalks, driveways or airport runways.

Look for a blade with tilt and angle features. The materials should be reinforced to offer long life, even under harsh working conditions. The operator should have good visibility from the cab with the tool attached and clear views to the cutting edge. A quality blade should have reversible cutting edges to extend the components’ wear life, while durable, wrapped hoses will help ensure leak-free operation. Two or more of the machines in the fleet should be able to operate the work tool, for added versatility and flexibility. Universal couplings should be a consideration if this kind of flexibility is desired.

Dozer Blades

Dozer blades incorporate a rugged track-type tractor variable power angle tilt blade with simultaneous tilt and angle capability for superior control and maneuverability. The center section of its bolt-on, cutting edge is reversible to extend wear life. Angled end bits, modeled after track-type tractor blades, allow flush cutting against a vertical surface when the blade is fully tilted. Adjustable, removable skid shoes enhance stability and control depth when operating on a surface such as asphalt or concrete.

Bolt-on edge segments further protect the cutting edge, lengthening the usable life of the tool. The edge is a structural component of the work tool and its blade becomes weakened if it is unprotected.

When selecting a blade, consider the application in which it will be used most often. Landscaping work typically requires more precise cuts and final grading and so the adjustability of a six-way blade is ideal for this type of work. Angle blades are better suited for rough grading, snow removal and general earth-moving tasks. In general, the biggest work tool may not always be the most efficient, or the most advantageous for a particular customer. Contractors that will use their blades most often for grading may seek the widest blade configuration possible to extend beyond the tracks.
