P&H TripRite™ Keeps a ‘Tight Rein’ on Electric Shovel Dipper Trip Operation and Maintenance

P&H has developed an improved dipper trip system known as the P&H TripRite, bringing increased power and performance-enhancing control to the dipper trip function.

With the development of larger-capacity electric mining shovels, mines and shovel manufacturers alike have sought a dipper trip system that can handle the increased demands associated with bigger dippers and payloads.

The P&H TripRite uses a single-motor planetary drive system with digital drive for increased control and reliability, and reduced operating cost. The digital control ramps-up smoothly to required torque levels and helps to minimize mechanical shock to wire rope and other system components.

While TripRite can deliver significantly more trip torque than traditional systems, the drive is programmed to supply just the right amount of torque required for current conditions.

The P&H TripRite uses an electronically commutated motor to drive a compact gear reduction system and spooling drum. The new motor operates with significantly less inertia while delivering up to three times more line-pull. The motor is also sealed, so there is no need to handle, apply, or store grease for bearing maintenance. An integral brake eliminates the problem of sagging rope when the operator shuts-down the machine.

Dipper trip adjustments are managed quickly and easily using touch-screen software via a Graphic User Interface (GUI) or PanelView system. Many drive values can be adjusted directly from the operator’s station.

Call your local P&H MinePro Services office today for more information on the P&H TripRite system. Brochure XS-2636 provides further details.

495HR (Hard Rock) High Performance Electric, Rope Shovel sold to Foundation Coal West

Foundation Coal West, new owners of the Belle Ayr and Eagle Butte Mines in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin, have selected Bucyrus’ 495HR (Hard Rock) high performance electric rope shovel to support their increased production requirements at the Belle Ayr mine. The next 495 series shovel will be going to work at the Belle Ayr mine in Wyoming.

The 495 series shovel has a proven history of outstanding productivity and incorporates new and innovative technologies to further enhance its capabilities. The 495 utilizes the Siemens AC - IGBT electric drive system. The AC system eliminates brushes, fuses and RPC components that are high maintenance items on DC drive machines. A fully modularized electrical room ships directly to the field to facilitate the erection process.

The 495HR shovels carry the new “SuperCab” which is setting industry standards for operator visibility, comfort and safety. In addition, the 495HR machinery house includes an additional workroom under the operator’s cab and roof hatches, which allow ready access to all components on board the shovel.

Reliability and ease of maintenance are key ingredients of the 495 design. A few of the numerous features include a third rail swing system (which uses larger, wider, flangeless lower rollers) and lowered swing planetaries to provide for improved maintainability and ease of maintenance. A low inertia boom design is an exclusive feature of Bucyrus’ rope crowd machines and allows for greater operator control and visibility when swinging. In addition, design enhancements in all structural areas and increased horsepower in key digging motions, allows the 495 High Performance shovel to provide payload ratings at the top of its class. The addition of a Bucyrus dipper makes this the most productive electric rope shovel available on the market today.

The commissioning of the Foundation Coal West 495HR is expected to take place in August 2005, when it will join a fleet of Bucyrus brand shovels already operating at the mine site.
Bucyrus International, Inc. is a world leader in the manufacture of Draglines, Drills and Shovels for the surface mining industry. AC Solutions for Shovels

Image Guide Article Photo

In the late 1970’s, Siemens partnered with Bucyrus International of Milwaukee, Wisconsin to build the first AC drive system for large electric mining shovels. In the meantime more than 100 shovels with Siemens Acutrol AC are operating in North and South America, Australia, Asia, and Europe.

In 2000 we introduced the third generation Acutrol Series III / IGBT to the market. The first BI 495BII with Acutrol III has been operating at a mine in Peru since February 2000, and is setting new standards for performance and reliability.

The overall goal that drives design and sales of shovels is to minimize the costs per ton of material moved. This goal is influenced by many factors over the useful life of the machine. The most important factors are productivity, reliability, compatibility with the mine’s power distribution system, efficiency, maintenance and ease of troubleshooting. Acutrol III / IGBT creates benefits for the customer in each of these important areas. We have taken another step towards the goal of becoming a “low cost per ton leader.”

The AC squirrel cage induction motor is fundamental in reducing cycle time and cutting maintenance costs. The absence of DC motor commutation limits enables the shovel’s motions to reach faster speeds in digging and repositioning. AC motors don’t need brushes and don’t require commutator maintenance / overhauls like DC motors.

Throughout the development reliability, MTBF, and MTTR were our utmost concern. We expect shovel drive system MTBFs in the hundreds of days from the use of medium voltage, modular IBGT inverters with high power density and fewer components, military grade controls, and a single welded enclosure with separate, sealed cooling air circuits for power modules and controls.

Acutrol III / IGBT represents a breakthrough in compatibility with mine distribution systems. Incoming AC power is converted into DC with a so called Active Front End (AFE) replacing the normal SCR input rectifier. Benefits include a 1.0 power factor without reactive power compensation equipment, record low total harmonic distortion of less than 5%, and high tolerance for input voltage fluctuations.

Troubleshooting becomes easy with our new, touchscreen diagnostic computer. Easy to read graphics and text messages help the electrician to find a faulty component, troubleshoot the fault, run test routines, and observe the function of the system during operation. An ethernet radio link will allow access to the diagnostic computer from a remote station in the near future.

Acutrol III / IGBT is setting out to become the drive system of choice for electric mining shovels. This will be achieved with technology helping the customer to achieve his ultimate goal – lowest costs per ton.
